All interested students seeking a Ph.D. degree are encouraged to apply for admission directly to the CMSB program from September 1st for admission to the subsequent fall term. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 1st. However, early applications are encouraged and are reviewed by the admissions committee on a rolling basis. The program does not directly admit students for an M.S. degree.
Minimum requirements for admission include a baccalaureate degree in a natural or physical science or engineering program, and three letters of recommendation. Candidates must possess a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4) or its equivalent from an accredited institution. Prior research experience is highly desirable and letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the applicant's research accomplishments are particularly valuable to the evaluation process.
Selected applicants will be invited for an interview via Zoom. Successful applicates will be invited to visit The University of Pittsburgh and funds to cover travel expenses are available.
Foreign applicants with undergraduate degrees from countries other than Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and provide official score reports from both the spoken (TSE) and written (TWE) parts of the examination.

- Applicants who are citizens of countries where English is not the official language ( and the Province of Quebec in Canada) are required to submit evidence of English language proficiency by submitting the official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Duolingo. A minimum result of 100 iBT TOEFL, a minimum result of 7.0 on the IELTS or a minimum result of 120 on Duolingo is required for admission to the program. Scores must be less than two years old (24 months) from September 1st. Applicants who have earned a bachelor's degree or a higher degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States are exempt from submittting English language proficiency test results.
